The escort has years of experience with escorting trips to PNG and will provide an educational and caring experience. Introduction to the travelers in your group and orientation for the exciting journey ahead. Overnight: AIRWAYS HOTEL (D)
Saturday and Sunday 19 and 20 August 2017 – After an hour flight to Mt. Hagen we transfer to the Highlands Showgrounds and are immersed in the excitement of the Highlands Show. Two days of world renowned celebration, famous for its color, culture and vibrancy. It is a truly spectacular event, which has been called one of the 12 travel wonders of the world. Experience the coastal, lowland and highlands sing-sing groups which reflect the incredible diversity of the Papua New Guinea’s landscape – an unforgettable, sensory overload of sights and sounds, a photographers paradise. After the show, return to our hotel rooms which have panoramic views, modern bathroom, electric blankets and continental quilts for the cool highland evenings. Evening talk about this Highlands culture. Overnights: RONDON RIDGE (BLD)
Monday 21 August 2017 Transfer from Mt. Hagen to Karawari, near the area where Margaret Meade lived, it’s renowned for artifacts, spirit houses, a lifestyle little changed by modern times. Your escort has decades of experience here, having established good relationships with the local villages. The day includes visits to see traditional village life and customs. As recently as the 1960’s (perhaps) there was headhunting and cannibalism in this area. Accommodations, meals, all touring and transfers included. KARAWARI LODGE (BLD)
Tuesday 22 August 2017 After breakfast, a full day’s excursion to the remote rivers and lakes. The jungle is pristine here, there’s a sense of timelessness, and your guide will enhance your village visits with background information. Your escort will share his expertise on selecting, buying, and shipping artifacts. Perhaps a school visit will be included. Overnight: KARAWARI LODGE (BLD)
Wednesday and Thursday 23 – 24 August 2017 After breakfast, transfer to the charter flight to rarely visited Lake Murray Lodge, amidst jungle-clad environs. Set your watch back 900 years. This is a world unspoiled. Days are full of adventure learning about the topography, cultures, flora and fauna of this most culturally diverse country in the world. Overnights: LAKE MURRAY LODGE (BLD)
Friday and Saturday 25 – 26 August 2017 Charter aircraft flight to Tari over the Central Ranges, which are some of the most rugged and impressive landscapes in the world. See Huli Wigmen, this area has tribes people who are the least Westernized in PNG. Nature walks amidst spectacular scenery – waterfalls, rain forest, mountain vistas, and probably you’ll see in the distance the elusive Bird of Paradise. Enjoy two days visiting areas of cultural interest. In contrast to the Sepik people whose art is in ceremonial and decorative carvings, these Highland people integrate body decoration, face painting and human hair wigs as art. Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs and Steel is largely based upon this vibrant Huli culture. The yellow painted face paint of these Huli Wigmen are iconic P.N.G.; have plenty of back up batteries for your camera. Guest speakers, daily written information and discussions will enhance your understanding of this culture. At 7,500 ft the area is conducive to touring. Overnights: AMBUA LODGE (BLD)
Sunday 27 August 2017 – Fly to Port Moresby – Time permitting the group may wish on their own to arrange a visit to the Nature Gardens which rates, according to Trip Advisor, as one of the best sights in Port Moresby. Overnights: AIRWAYS HOTEL (BLD)
Monday 28 August 2017 – Transfer to your further outgoing international flight and join those who say this Highland Show is one of the most memorable in a lifetime of travels. (B)
